Exhausting but interesting! ( My Personal Journal for A Course That I Took Previously )

Personal Journal

SOUND STORY- 2ND. JANUARY (Wed) Bilik Tayangan

Today we discussed on how to make an interesting sound story. After combining all the ideas provided by every group members, we made a decision at last where we chose Soon Mun’s idea which was regarding to a suicide scene. The first step of the sound story would be the sound of a handphone ring and then a ‘tut’ to show someone refuses to answer the phone. The second step would be the sound of opening the window followed by the sound of wind and grass. The next step would be the sound of the prolonging scream of a person which was to show that someone else is falling after jumping off a building. The last step would be the sound of a ‘dub’ to show that the body drops on ground. Personally, I do like the idea but unfortunately due to lacking of a more clearer clue, not many of our classmates managed to guess what was the whole story about and some said it was a ghost story which making everybody giggled.

SCULPTOR & SCULPTURE-8TH. JANUARY (Tues) Genta Budaya
After a few days of discussing, finally we decided to use lady bird to convey a message of the extinction of living things due to environmental pollutions as our main theme. At first, we did have a few obstacles in doing this especially when we wanted to make the sculpture looking more like a real spider which was our first idea and was difficult indeed where we almost wanted to give up. Nevertheless, we decided to stick to our original idea. So, everyone of us was trying our best to hold up our legs or hands high to make our spider works. But, the spider sculpture turned out to be looking more alike a lady bird than a spider and thus, no matter how we insisted to stick to our own idea, at last we still had to change the spider to lady bird for the sake of the group. It was exhausting because we had to remain a constant position such as holding up a leg high until our sculptor finished her sculpting. From this activity, everyone of us strongly felt the physical supports that provided by other members during the sculpting process. The lady bird did really make all of us became one .

RHYTHM & MOVEMENT- 15TH. JANUARY (Tues) Astaka Seni
This was one of our activities which we had the most changes and modifications including some quarrelsomeness especially on the dance steps. At first, we were thinking to dance using the song of “Pretty Woman” and we would walk like Julia Roberts walks in the “Pretty Woman” movie. It did not turn out to be what everyone really wanted. And then, I was suggesting to have a jazz dance using the same music which was found from Youtube. But, most of my group members preferred something else other than this. Desperate for guidance, our leader invited one of her friends who is really good at dancing to guide us but his dancing steps would be too advance for most of us although he had tried his best to modify the steps into simpler ones. Anyway, we really should thank him for willing to come and guide us patiently. After the headaching-modifications, finally we came out with our very own idea which was a combination of both slow and fast movements with slow dance steps matching the soft and sentimental music while the faster dance steps matching the fast and hot music. It was sort of the YING and YANG principle which symbolizes a balance in all aspects of life.

MONOLOGUE- 16TH. JANUARY (Wed) DKAP Foyer
After a few alterations, I managed to create a few lines monologue regarding an angry and suspicious wife who is suspecting her husband is unfaithful to her when he tells that he is going to be home late. The monologue did provide me much space for self-emotional expression. After performing it, my lecturer, Pn. Ju commented that I managed to build the character. Although it was a brief comment but it did really give me a real boost in my future performances.

DIALOGUE- 30TH.JANUARY (Wed) DKAP Foyer
I was glad that Elizabeth invited me as her partner, we discussed on the dialogue for a few times. I suggested we did a story deals with a fight between two sisters due to a misunderstanding. So, at first my idea was that one of the sister misunderstood the other sister for having betrayed her by stealing her boyfriend with a happy ending where the sister found out the truth at last that it was only a misunderstanding. But, later on, Elizabeth told me that she did not really like the story because the character was making her looking like an idiot sister. So, we changed the storyline a little bit and the result turned out to be quite good for both of us where I agreed to take up the character of a betrayal sister and she agreed to take up the character of a sister who is being betrayed. I did really like the idea and it was really much better than my previous idea because the latter did really provide both of us lots of opportunity to express our own emotions. After our performance, my lecturer, Pn. Ju commented that she did like the lines very much and from my performance, she could see another side of me. Frankly, I really think the comments she gave would be something unforgettable.

BLITHE SPIRIT-19TH.FEBRUARY (Tues) Astaka Seni

I did this again together with Elizabeth, only that this time we added one more person who would be playing the character of Elvira, she is our classmate, Flora. Elizabeth wanted to be Charles and thus, I would be Ruth, the second wife of Charles. To be honest, this is not an easy play indeed. When we first be given a tiny part of the script, none of us had really seen the original play and thus, we had no idea at all on the history of the play. What we did was we tried our best to think of a way to act the characters logically based on the lines given in the script and besides, we were also trying to make the result of our performance more English due to the reason that the script is originally made by the English. But, after the performance, from my lecturer’s comments, I could assume that she had a higher expectation on our play especially on Elvira’s character. Finally, we realized that actually we were allowed to modify the lines in the script in order to make it something more creative and it needn't be something exactly like the original English play. Oh I see…

TRIBAL DANCE- 27th.FEBRUARY (Wed) Astaka Seni
This was the part where the most of the props were 100% self-made including our costumes. We really have to thank the pakcik who did not mind to help us to cut the fronds of the coconut trees. We used the leaves of coconut tree to make our costumes, coconut shells for females’ top, the middle part of the frond for spears and the drum sticks as well. As for the masque that made of layers of soaked-newspapers, we used black and red to represent mystery and violence. In additional, we also used shiny sequins to decorate it. Besides, there would be also some banana leaves to cover our pail which would be used as a drum for the leader of the tribe. For this performance, I had been asked to play the leader of the tribe who would have to read a mantra and shout more of course but it was a pretty fun experience for me. To make the mantra scene more real, I got a real Tibetan blessing mantra which I have learnt from the Buddhist and used it as the mantra in the scene.
Our tribal dance is named ‘Kutariko tribe’. It tells the intention of a tribe to find a new place and how they ask for god blessing. Besides, it also tells how the leader of the tribe, Kikilomanjaro gives the instructions to the people who under him. This idea was born after our previous idea which the tribe supposed to be in an animal hunting scene instead of finding new place. But, due to some difficulties in getting the right dance steps for the last scene, we finally agreed with one of our members, Rose’s idea where we replaced the animal hunting scene with finding new place scene. The new idea surprisingly brought us a pretty nice result although we didn’t really practise much on the dance steps as we were kept practising the previous one for all this while.
The dance started with all of the tribe’s members sailing in a boat looking for directions in order to find a new place to settle down. In the boat, the leader was sitting behind and beating the drum while giving instructions. A member who was standing right in front of the boat was looking for directions while others would be doing the rowing job. Later, when they found the place, they got down and a brief praying ceremony was held where the leader lighted up incense in a cup which was called as the “cup of life”. The smoke rising to the cloud symbolizes the calling of the gods’ blessings upon the new land. While the leader was reading the mantra, the rest of the members would be shouting ‘Kutariko’ repeatedly to join the praying and at the same time to celebrate their success in finding a new place.
In a nutshell, our tribal dance is complemented with ferocious and vibrant chants to herald and celebrate the discovery of a new place. The discovery of a new land marks a beginning of the life Kutariko tribe. The tribal members experience an euphoria of joy as they dance to the upbeat rhythms and enchanting tribal chant.
During the performance day, everything ran quite smoothly and the only two words I could remember from Pn. Ju’s comment would be “Good job!”

MAJOR PERFORMANCE- 1st. APRIL (Tues) Auditorium of Engineering Faculty
This was the part where we argued the most due to different of individual opinions. But, personally, I do think that everyone of us knows and understands each other more after the performance. We really had spent lots of time in having meetings to discuss on how to modify the lines and story development of the script until we had to change the title of the script from “Prodigal daughter” to “Tears of Butterfly” at last. I decided to play the role of the mother of Rachel in the play who is a greedy, boastful and busy body woman in the family which I really interested in.
Besides, I was also the group’s prop manager where I had to be in charge of the props required and also props arrangement during the performance. I really wanna to thank my juniors, Sapphire, Hoe Yi, Min Hui, Eunice and Evelyn; my adoptive group members, Lanny, Hidayah and Flora; and also some of the ‘not supposed to be in the list’ helpers such as Carine, Alex and Jaclyn in helping me to arrange the props on that day. I am really grateful to them all.
I am also very grateful to God that everything ran smoothly during the performance day and everyone of the group members really did the best. It was really a great experience to me. Theatre performance is exhausting but interesting indeed.
